Location: The Netherlands
Considered one of the world’s oldest theme parks, the Efteling is an iconic global destination where people flock to escape reality. A fantastical place where fairytales come to life, the Aces’ team were commissioned to revamp the Efteling Hotel; writing the newest chapter in the park’s age-old story that has captivated the imagination of millions around the world since 1952.
Spanning across the full scope of Efteling Hotel’s 122 rooms, elevators and corridors, this was the first time that the 'Castle in the Sky’s experience was being revisited in 10 years. Our mission? To update Efteling’s hotel experience so that it would continue to would translate the magic and nostalgia of the past into the future for the yet another decade, and then some.
THE CONCEPT
Extending the theme park experience to the hotel, familiar themes were reimagined with an imaginative twist for a journey that is anything but expected. From surreal time machine-inspired elevators and immersive hallways etched with custom 3D Escher-inspired carpet design to whimsical, quirky rooms, every step of the guest experience was curated in detail, to deliver a captivating experience which inspires a sense of child-like wonder.
THE CHALLENGE
A value-driven brand at its core, Efteling wanted an experience that would embrace true innovation whilst aligning with their sustainable value. By integrating the principles of circular design into every aspect of our process, cohesively reducing the project’s environmental footprint as well as the overall costs.
Permanent fixtures such as panelling, headboards and closets were recycled with fresh new colors, whilst a in-room Puss In Boots inspired concept was developed to transform the mundane chore of separating waste into a playful, interactive activity that would engage adults and children alike.
DESIGN DETAILS
Drawing upon the theme of enchanted worlds, the rooms were designed to play with shadow and light; creating a dream-like landscape where nothing is as it seems. Custom-designed curtains were developed to recreate the magic of a starry night, whilst the custom-made wallpaper offered a cover of clouds. Functionality was fused with imagination, rethinking the typical hotel stay into an interactive, sensorial experience where anything could happen.
That's why we partnered up with Bulsink, who made sure that our design came to life.
