Visiting the Clique, Utrecht | Aces of Space

For the past three years, Aces of Space has been involved in the development of ‘Shopperhal’, an exotic market hall in the South-East Bijlmer area of Amsterdam. Shopperhal is located in the middle of the Amsterdamse Poort, a multicultural shopping, housing and entertainment area that is being transformed by CBRE Global Investors in the years to come. Shopperhal is an important landmark and social shopping hub for the Bijlmer residents from the early 1980’s. With a unique offer of exotic fruits & veg, fabrics, arts & crafts, fashion and food it can best be described as a souq or bazar. We believe it is our responsibility to not just come up with good design, but really dig deep when it comes to sustainability and circularity and integrate it at the core of our concept.

Within this framework we recently visited ‘The Clique’, a startup with sustainability running through its veins. De Clique was established in Utrecht, in 2019, by experienced entrepreneurs Anja Cheriakova (BinBang) and Bas van Abel (Fairphone) to combat wasting valuable urban resources. Many current types of organic resources, such as coffee grounds, cuttings, and food leftovers, are thrown out with the non-recyclable waste. Consequently, these valuable organics are destroyed in incinerators. As a result, the potential of a large part of the organic resources is barely utilised. By properly separating these materials at the source, they can be reused as resources for new products. De Clique has developed a resource service for the separation and CO2-neutral collection of these organic resources from companies, supermarkets, and hospitality facilities. The initiative was launched in Utrecht and, today, there are over 100 clients, including shopping centre Hoog Catharijne and Utrecht University, where organic resources are collected.
